Abel Mountain History

In 1968 Gordon and Sally Abel created Mobile Acres Campground on the banks of the Third Branch of the White River. They built the spacious campsites that called to many loyal patrons who loved the camping lifestyle. Care for the campground was transferred to the Mendl family in 1993, and in 2003 the Rea Family purchased Mobile Acres Campground and continued in their predecessor’s footsteps by completing many improvements to move the 101 site campground into the 21st century. To acknowledge the changes and pay honor to the original creators, the Reas renamed Mobile Acres Campground to Abel Mountain Campground. After upgrading the main campground, in 2010 the Reas expanded the campground an additional 30 sites and continued improvements for the benefit of their patrons.

August, 2011 brought devastation with Hurricane Irene. The lower section of the campground was completely destroyed and the campground ceased operations. After much soul searching, the Reas decided to rebuild and tackled that monumental task. By the summer of 2012 they were able to reopen a new and improved campground with a new infrastructure, pool and pavilion. Now fast forward three years – Ken and Sylvia Manning had the good fortune to learn of this gem and in April, 2016 they became the proud owners.

Ken and Sylvia’s goal is to continue to provide a pleasant family camping destination with activities and entertainment for all ages. Like to hike? Pick up a trail map and wander through the 260 acres of trails just across the river. Love horseshoes? Come try out our horseshoe pits by the river. Want to take a dip?
